Specialty Workshops!!

The Accent Intensive with Kate Hurman

This intensive is great if you don’t wish to find yourself scrambling to get an accent ‘intact’ for an audition you have the following day! Get yourself prepared now so that you’ll be ready, with your accent/dialect dropped in so much
so that casting will believe you are actually from that place.

You may understand the character’s background, and how they move through their world,
but if your accent is off, so is the performance. Using established techniques in a unique fashion
this weekend intensive will allow actors, and students of acting to develop a clear understanding
of the steps involved in accent acquisition.

Accent is not a question of simply copying sound but rather of developing an understanding of shape and culture. Addressing issues of vocal drift, placement, rhythm and pace, the workshop participants will be actively engaged in identifying their own accent of origin, along with a focus on RP (Received Pronunciation or Upper Class British), a working class British accent, Standard General Australian, and Standard General American.

“I’ve worked with Kate on both a Newfoundland and an Aboriginal dialect. In just a few hours, I felt transformed. People even told me I looked different. The taking on of a character is an amazing process and Kate knows how to move it along swiftly – it’s truly incredible. A few days post-coaching, I found the accent slipping out in my regular conversation, even when I wasn’t ‘working’ on it. Love, love, love working with Kate! That is all.”  Claudia Jurt

2-DAY MASTERCLASS
with JUDITH THOMPSON

DECEMBER 5 & 6, 2015

A workshop to teach actors who also have an interest in creating, writing their own characters and/or shows!

Official details to come, but here is some info from past workshops:

In her Say It, Shout It, Move It workshop, Judith Thompson encouraged participants to tell true stories and to make others’ true stories their own.

“I believe that all my own best writing has happened under pressure, and very fast. I also believe that I need to say it, shout it and move it before I give it to actors.”

Judith Thompson, renowned Canadian playwright, leads this two day workshop for actors, playwrights and creators in which she guides participants through fast, immediate, uncensored writing.

The material that emerged was raw, surprising, and often brilliant. But where does a playwright go from there? Whether you’re getting back in the room with Judith, or are entering for the first time, this workshop will help take you to the next step! Participants will look at innovation, structure and character paths, combining organic intuition with “hammer and nails” narrative work.

Judith Clare ThompsonOC (born September 20, 1954) is a Canadian playwright who lives in Toronto, Ontario. Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail once declared that “…in this country, a playwright as good as Judith Thompson is a miracle.” She has twice been awarded the Governor General’s Award for drama, and is the recipient of many other awards including the Order of Canada.

More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Thompson

COMEDY in FILM & TV with SHEILA MCCARTHY!!

Would you like an opportunity to work with Sheila McCarthy, one of the most honoured actors in Canada, having won two Genie Awards (film), two Gemini Awards (television), and two Dora Awards (theatre) among multiple nominations?

Would you also like to work on your comedy skills for film & television?

Comedic acting requires a certain speed, tempo and timing. Comedy varies from sitc

As casting directors are always telling me, even some of the best actors cannot pull off comedy.
It’s a skill and Sheila McCarthy happens to be an expert. And we are lucky enough to pluck her
away from her busy filming schedule to join us in Ottawa. After many attempts, we’ve
finally succeeded in booking her!

The best advice she gave when coaching me for an audition: “Don’t
wait for the director to tell you what he wants, you have to show him
what he wants!” That and do something different. After what appeared to be a set of ‘boring’ sides, the choices we worked on ended up being hilarious (and in this case appropriate for the comedic genre of this show)
The director laughed and said ‘nice take of it’. Did I book the part?
No. It was cut. However, he did cast me in another role! I owe it to Sheila.

SHEILA McCARTHY is a multiple Genie, Gemini, and Dora Award-winning actress in the classic Canadian films I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing and The Lotus Eaters. Just recently, McCarthy starred in the feature film Antiviral, the directorial debut of film scion Brandon Cronenberg, which stole the spotlight at TIFF 2012.

A lead in CBC’s hit series Little Mosque on the Prairie, which just completed its sixth and final season, Sheila McCarthy shines on the screen and stage with many credits including Die Hard 2, Disney’s Paradise, I Was a Rat, Roxana, Picket Fences, Wonderland, and Road to Avonlea. In Stratford, McCarthy played ‘Sally Bowles’ in Cabaret, ‘Helena’ in Midsummer Night’s Dream and ‘Adelaide’ in Guys and Dolls.

A more complete list of Sheila’s credits:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0565319/?ref_=nv_sr_1

In this workshop Sheila will take participants on an exploration of classic film and television scenes from across the decades and lead actors on an intense and playful discovery and exploration of their “funny bones”.

With an intense pace, participants will exercise and enhance their comedic skills in scenes prepared with partners. Scenes will be coached, redirected with notes, tools, and tips to help each actor recognize and leverage personal strengths and relax into their work so they may bring their character and the scene to life in a manner that services both the text and the camera.

We invite all actors with some prior experience and/or training, union or non-union, with or without agency representation, 16 years of age (or turning 16 by the end of the workshop) to register for this workshop. Please note: Participants are required to prepare a 1-2 minute comic monologue of their own choosing for presentation and coaching on the first night of the workshop. Selections may be from any comic genre, any era and from film, TV or stage texts.

Sharon Forrest has been a Casting Director since the early 90’s and cast many great film & tv projects in that time.

From an e-nterview with Sharon Forrest:

“I have been working with Susan in casting since 1992. I was her assistant until 1995 when I started casting my own things. Our latest shows are Saving Hope (currently back in second season – 18 episodes), Rookie Blue – tv series (just wrapped its 4th season in January), Orphan Black – a new series (just wrapped end of February). We are just starting working on Heartland – CBC series that shoots in Calgary and we cast it with Rhonda Fisekci. We are in development on a few movies etc. Other than casting MOW’s in the past few years – we have been working on different pilots for all different networks.”
